Joy of Dance.jpg

Hello to both our new and returning families! We look forward to welcoming all the new students into the Joy of Dance family and reuniting with our returning students when classes start on Saturday, September 7th.

I know this seems like a long newsletter, but it’s only about 3 minutes to read through quickly because of all the helpful headlines!

A couple of important notes as classes start:

Important.jpgParents’ and Students’ Handbook

Our handbook is a great tool to help keep information easy to find, all in one place. If you haven’t already read through it, please do so at your earliest convenience. You can find it under the About tab on our website or a hard copy can be available upon request. This is the best reference for any questions you might have.  If you are unable to find the answer to your question after looking through the Handbook, feel free to contact us at info@joyofdancenh.com and we would be happy to assist you.

Newsletter Graphics.jpgEmail

Email is how we communicate all of our important messages to you.  To ensure you are receiving our emails, please add jackrabbittech.com to your safe list. You can also view all our sent messages through your portal when you log in. We recommend checking there if you find you haven’t been receiving monthly emails from us.

Newsletter Graphics-7.jpgDo I Need To Wait In The Reception Area?

We ask parents/guardians of students under the age of 6 to please wait in the reception area during their child’s class. This is to ensure if any accident or problem arises, the student will have a caretaker there immediately.  Parents of children ages 6-9 should let their child know if they will be leaving the studio during class time to make sure he or she is comfortable with that.

Important.jpgALL Parents Need To Enter The Studio The First Week Of Classes

Please review a provided hardcopy of our Agreement Policies that you signed off on when you registered and take a copy for your records. After you have read them, print and sign your name on the provided spreadsheets in the studio located on the office desk wall. This is to ensure all families have acknowledged our policies and will abide by them. They can also be found any time on our website!

Newsletter Graphics-8.jpgAre You Paying Tuition By Check?

If you are paying September’s tuition by check, please send it via mail this week or call us to find out when we will be at the studio this week! As payments are collected by the 10th of the month, we want to make sure everyone is accounted for since we won’t see many of you until after Setpmebr 10th when a late fee will be assed on all accounts with a balance.

Calendar.jpgMissed Classes and Makeups

If you know ahead of time that you are going to be absent from class, we would love an e-mail so we won’t worry. Missed classes can be made up with office permission anytime until the end of May, and even proactively when there is advance notice. You can keep track of absences through your parent portal.

Newsletter Graphics-9.jpgPerfect Attendance Update

Starting this year will no longer be implementing perfect attendance. We have received feedback from our families that their time is limited and it’s not always easy to make it to the same class on a different day. We also do not want to add stress to those who are sick or have prior family obligations. Dancers are still encouraged to make up missed classes to prevent falling behind in technique and choreography. There will still be many other ways dancers can be recognized throughout the year!

Newsletter Graphics-3.jpgDress Code

For questions about appropriate/required class attire, please refer to the Dress Code section of the Handbook. Please refer to this guide frequently.

Newsletter Graphics-4.jpgWater Bottles

Water bottles should be considered part of your dancer’s dress code to ensure hydration throughout the class. Please make sure students come to class prepared!

Private lessons are available to any student who would like extra work outside of regular classes. Please contact info@joyofdancenh.com with any questions.

Newsletter Graphics-6.jpgLet’s Get Social!

Check out our Facebook and Instagram! We often post pictures of classes, important studio information, as well as contests where you can win free stuff!

Family Movie Night

Among all the fun and exciting things that will be happening during the first month back, we are going to be hosting an outdoor movie night at the studio on September 20th at 6:45pm! The movie is TDB, but rest assured it will be fantastic! Please arrive between 6:15pm & 6:30pm to set up chairs and blankets, and don’t forget to bring snacks and bug spray. This is a great way for the dancers and their families to spend some quality time together outside of the studio walls!

Car.jpgParking

Our parking lot can be a little tricky to maneuver. When entering, please veer to the right. You can park in front of the building, on the side near the trees, and around back. When leaving, please follow the arrows and make a loop around the building. It is a one way parking lot. This will help with the flow of traffic, especially during high volume hours.

Studio Tour Video

If you are new to Joy of Dance, it might be helpful to sit down with your dancer and check out our Studio Tour video located on the “About” tab of our website. Click here: https://joyofdancenh.com/mission-statement-history/.

This will help new students understand how to navigate our studio.

-The Joy of Dance Staff

This is a very important newsletter filled with recital and registration information for next the dance season. Please make sure to read through thoroughly!

May/June Tuition

As stated in our policies, tuition is calculated by taking the number of weeks in the dance year for an annual rate, then dividing that into equal monthly payments September-April with a one and a half payment for May/June.  All accounts must be up to date before May 22nd in order to start purchasing Recital Tickets.

Recital Info

Recital is closing in very fast. You can find all recital information on the website under the recital tab here: https://joyofdancenh.com/recital/. It would be greatly appreciated if you read through all the information on the page and then email us with any remaining questions.  We also recommend printing the sheets out and highlighting the parts that pertain to your dancer. We know it is a lot of information but it all makes for a smooth and seamless performance weekend!

Recital Q&A Meetings with Miss Lindsey!

Do you have questions about your dancer’s big day? Miss Lindsey will be hosting two Q&A sessions to help ease the excitement and jitters of Recital. This is a great time to ask the director and other parents questions! Meetings will be held Tuesday, May 7th @ 10:15 am(childcare provided) in the reception area & Wednesday, May 8th @ 7:45 pm in the basement studio(you may use the back door). Can’t make those days? No problem! During the May 8th session, we will be going Facebook Live to share the meeting with those unable to attend. Be sure to follow Joy of Dance on Facebook to follow along! We also highly recommend those who are volunteering to be Backstage Moms to attend these sessions. Joy of Dance’s 30th Recital Merchandise

Joy of Dance was originally founded in 1989 under Linda Russell-Gallivan in Northwood, NH. This year is our 30th anniversary Recital! We have many fun things planned for the big show. We have also created a couple “30th Recital” merchandise items. Anyone may purchase these! Deadline is May 8th! Link: 30th Recital Merchandise

Community Service Opportunities through Joy of Dance

We have extended the deadline for collecting items to assemble care packages for military serving overseas as we hope to collect more supplies. These brave men and women often have to travel far away from their families and loved ones in order to do their job. Care packages are our way of getting the comforts of home to those who are deployed overseas. This is a wonderful way to show them our appreciation. Care package items needed include sunscreen, body wash, deodorant (.5oz), disposable razors, chapstick, mints, gum, personal size snacks, instant coffee, socks, etc. To find a complete list, please check out the donation bin in the studio!

On Saturday, May 11th we will be volunteering at the 25th Annual Pepper 5K Road Race at Barrington Elementary School. Proceeds of the race benefit the Barrington Chamber Scholarship fund in which $1,000 scholarships are awarded to several local high school seniors to help pay for college! Volunteers, please report to the school at 7:30 am. If you are unable to make it that day, the Barrington Chamber has also asked us to bake cookies for the event! Please join us in this wonderful community service project!

Performance Team and Hip Hop Troupe Interest Meeting

Being on a Performance Team and/or Hip Hop Troupe gives dancers more opportunities throughout the year to perform. They learn to rehearse more effectively and efficiently while working together as a team. They inspire and push one another to amazing new heights and show better technique over the course of the season due to hard work and extra practices. We offer Performance Teams for dancers starting at age 5 and Hip Hop Troupes for dancers starting at age 9.

Have questions about our teams/troupes? Wondering what the extra benefits of these classes hold?

Join us Wednesday, May 8th 7:15-7:45 pm for all the answers you are looking for! This meeting is for parents of dancers who are new to our teams and troupes.  Dancers are welcome to attend if they wish but are not required to attend. Current team/troupe parents need not attend.

Back Stage Moms

We are still in need of Backstage Moms for Recital. This volunteer position is pivotal to the success of our dancer’s big show! Sorry Dads, but no boys are allowed in the band room! BSM will get to watch their dancer perform from the audience in a reserved section set aside for them. Please read through the Back Stage Mom advice to get a clear understanding of what is required when signing up. If you are interested, please email Nicole at info@joyofdancenh.com or see the front desk of the studio.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are working on a list of volunteers that we will need for Recital.  Be on the lookout for that in the next week or so.  Please let us know if you are available to help! Remember, volunteers do not need to purchase tickets to Recital, but will get to see their dancer(s) perform.

Summer Dance

Can’t go 3 months without dance? Neither can we! Registration for Summer Dance is now open through our website. We are offering new classes this summer for beginners through advanced dancers for ages 1.5 to Adult! Check out our Summer Classes and Summer Camps on our website!

There is no membership fee for Summer Dance classes. Tuition is due upon registration in order to hold your spot in the class. You may choose to pay a non-refundable $25 deposit to hold your spot. Please indicate in the comments section if this is your choice. If no comment is left, you will be charged the full tuition amount at the time of registration.

Recommendations for the 2019-2020 dance year

Recommendations for the 2019-2020 dance year along with the schedule will be coming out soon.  If you have any questions concerns about placements, don’t hesitate to schedule a placement meeting with Miss Lindsey.  Both the dancer and a parent must be present at the meeting.  More information on this will be available soon!

Referral Program

We offer a referral program!  We love to hear when you recommend our studio to friends and family members.  It is greatly appreciated and we want to reward you for it! Make sure to let your friend or family know to write your name in the referral box upon registration.  Once the dancer has been in class for three months, we will apply the $25 credit to BOTH accounts as a thank you.  Credits will be applied for new family accounts, not for individual dancers.

Crazy Hair Week!

Last week of classes from May 28th through June 3rd is Crazy Hair Week! Dancers can come to class with fun and funky hairdos.  Please make sure hair is still properly secured and pulled out of the dancer’s face.  We are excited to see what our dancers will come up with!

Spring Break

The studio will be closed from April 20th- April 26th for Spring Break.  Classes will resume Saturday, April 27th. Good luck to all of our dancers dancing in Disney that week!

Recital Details Coming Soon!

By the end of next week, there will be a lot of Recital details coming your way (including show times)!  It is a lot of information to read through, but don’t feel overwhelmed!  Not all of it relates to every dancer and it is clearly labeled for you to follow.  Everything Recital related will also be posted to the Recital tab on the website.  We recommend putting all dates in your calendar/planner as soon as it is released.  This way you won’t miss anything!

Speaking of Recital…

Does your dancer have their correct attire for the big stage? Not sure where to find this information? Head over to the Recital tab of our website and click the “2019 Recital Costume Details” button. Costume and shoe information is organized by class. Be sure to read ALL of your dancer’s costume details for each class/style they are enrolled in!

Recital Q&A Meetings with Miss Lindsey!

Do you have questions about your dancer’s big day? Miss Lindsey will be hosting two Q&A sessions to help ease the excitement and jitters of Recital. This is a great time to ask the director and other parents questions! Meetings will be held Tuesday, May 7th @ 10:15 am (childcare provided) & Wednesday, May 8th @ 7:45 pm. If you are unable to attend, please submit your questions to info@joyofdancenh.com by Monday, May 8th and we will answer them during the FaceBook live event for you to watch at your convenience.

Share Week and Practice Videos

The last week of classes before the break is a fun week at the studio!  We take the time to share dances with our parents and with the other classes being held at the same time.  This helps the dancers get used to having an audience and to get excited about the progress they’ve made so far with their Recital pieces.  All teachers also videotape dances this week in order to send out videos for practicing over break and beyond.  This means parents can sit back and enjoy the performances the dancers are putting on for them! All videos will be posted to the BAND app by day of the week.  You can find our band here–>https://band.us/n/adacz9KereR9H

  May/June Tuition

Just a reminder that yearly tuition is calculated per the average number of weeks in the year then divided into 9.5 payments.  This makes paying monthly easier than calculating a different amount each month as “one month” isn’t always 4 weeks of classes. To ensure all accounts are up to date before recital tickets go on sale, the last payment is combined into 1 and 1/2 payments due on May 1st.  All accounts must be paid in full by May 20th in order to purchase recital tickets.

Class Recommendations & Fall Schedule

If you haven’t already, please don’t forget to let us know if you are making any changes to your current schedule for next year by Friday, April 5th.  Once we have student counts from our membership renewals, we will begin the recommendation process and then start to plan the schedule out.  We expect to release the 2019-2020 schedule mid-May along with student recommendations.

Class recommendations roughly follow the age of the dancer, but experience and other factors do affect placements as well.  All of our teachers have put a lot of thought into the best placements for our students to grow the best.  Please encourage constructive conversations and discourage any negative discussions you may hear from your dancers about where other dancers have been placed.  There is no place for negativity at Joy of Dance!

There are a lot of factors that go into class placements, and our teachers have years of training and education to determine the best placements for all our dancers.  As our dancers are constantly changing and growing, we are also constantly reassessing our dancers, and therefore will let you know if recommendations change by the end of the year.  You will have an opportunity to schedule a placement meeting to discuss any concerns as well.  Concerns will not be addressed through email.  Thank you for your help and understanding on this matter!

March Newsletter

Annual Membership

The annual membership is a new offering this year designed to help make the enrollment process as easy as possible for our dance families.  In the past, classes have filled up quickly when registration opens, some as quickly as 2 hours after registration opens! With this new process, we will be able to foresee what classes may need extra levels, enabling our dancers the opportunity to sign up their favorite classes. We’ll be sending out a separate email with more detailed information later next week.

The annual membership fee is $40 per dancer and $75 per family and will be charged April 1st to current families.  The fee includes priority registration, the Recital Digital Download, easy enrollment, and special discounts for birthday parties, workshops and summer camps/classes. Reminders will be sent via email in February and March.  Families wishing to opt out of membership must provide written notification (email) no later than March 15th.

Recital Makeup Kits

A little worried about applying stage makeup on your young dancer at Recital? We are happy to offer Recital makeup kits for our youngest dancers ages 3-8! Kits include eyeshadow in warm taupe and champagne shimmer, liner in burgundy plum, sweet pink cheek color, long-lasting raspberry lip color, and a double-sided application brush. An instruction packet and a video tutorial link are also included and will retail for $36. Please email Nicole at info@joyofdancenh.com by MARCH 15TH if you are interested in purchasing one.

*For our first-year parents- you are probably thinking, “Makeup?! Why does my child need to wear makeup?” We’re so glad you asked! Dancers wear make-up on stage to enhance their facial features, which can be washed out under the harsh stage lights.  Younger dancers just need a little bit of light makeup applied to counteract the stage lights. A little eye shadow, mascara, blush, and pink lipstick will help your dancer shine even more on stage! It does help to practice ahead of time if you think it might bother him or her.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

To view choreography videos to help your dancer practice at home, download the Band App in the App store.  After, you can use this Choreography Link to connect to our profile.  Dances will be placed in albums according to the day of the week they meet. Download Recital Music 2019 here.

If choosing drop-in, you must email or call the office by 6:00 pm the day of in order to reserve your spot. Please note, we cannot guarantee an open spot for drop-ins without a call ahead.

Any dancer ages 8 and older are invited on Saturday, March 16th at 2:00 pm to audition for the Student Choreography Showcase.  Choreography for the Showcase is a great responsibility!  We audition dancers to make sure they are taking it seriously and are prepared with all the steps completed on or before the audition date. There is a $10 audition fee per dancer and a sign-up sheet is on Miss Lindsey’s desk at the studio. Choreography pieces MUST be fully completed at the time of the audition in order to be considered for the Showcase.  More information on this can be found on the Recital tab on our website.  As long as the dancer has completed all steps on or before March 16th and he or she will make it into the Showcase,  There is a performance fee of $20 per dancer per dance to cover the cost of running the Showcase.  Both audition fee and performance fee are due at the time of auditions.   Audience members do not need to buy tickets for the Showcase. We look forward to a wonderful show!

Winter break

We will be closed for Winter Break from February 23rd to March 1st.

We will be open for President’s Day February 18th!

Annual Membership

What is annual membership?

The annual membership is a new offering this year designed to help make the enrollment process as easy as possible for our dance families.  In the past, classes have filled up quickly when registration opens, some as quickly as 2 hours after registration opens! If we knew ahead of time of the interest in that class, we could have opened up another option in order to accommodate all the dancers in that level. To find out more info about the membership, please refer to the email sent out to all families on January 26th!

Share Week and Practice Videos

The last week of classes is a fun week at the studio! We take the time to share dances with our parents and with the other classes being held at the same time.  This helps the dancers get used to having an audience and to get excited about the progress they’ve made so far with their Recital pieces.  All the teachers also videotape this week in order to send out for practicing over break and beyond.  This means parents can sit back and enjoy the performances the dancers are putting on for them! To view choreography videos, download the Band App in the App store.  After, you can use this Choreography Link to connect to our profile.  Dances will be placed in albums according to the day of the week they meet. Download Recital Music 2019 here.

Important Message About Posting Dances to Social Media

We LOVE to see pictures of our dancers having fun both inside outside of class, so please tag us when posting on FaceBook(@joyofdancenh) or Instagram(joyofdancenh).  However, we respectfully ask you not to post any full videos of choreography you take during class or at any performances until after Recital takes place.  This is because rehearsal videos are meant for practice purposes only and are not performance ready for the public to see.  We also want people to be surprised at Recital!  After Recital, we are happy to see any videos you have taken of dances posted to social media.  In fact, we encourage it!  We just ask that you please tag us in your posts so people know where you dance and how to find us.  Thank you for your understanding on this!

Receiving Costumes & Tights

We are getting so excited for Recital now that costumes are starting to be delivered. Please note that we will be handing them out once we receive ALL for each class but some costumes will be shipping at a later date due to warehouse stocking. No need to worry if your costume hasn’t arrived in the near future. We promise all costumes have been ordered and have shipping dates.

As stated in our new Recital costume fee policy, one pair of tights per style per dancer is included in the costume fee. Tights will be passed out in March.

Bathroom breaks

We want to make sure our dancers are getting the most out of their time while at Joy of Dance, so please remind them to use the bathroom before leaving home or when arriving at the studio.

Events

Did you know that under the Events page on the website, you can click on one of our events(studio closings/openings, vacations, performances, etc.) and it will import all the information right into your Google Calendar or iCal on your phone??  This makes it easy to keep up with happenings at the studio! Make sure you check it out if you haven’t already.

Speaking of Events…

We would love to see some of our Joy of Dance family come out to support our dancers in their upcoming performances.  It’s a great time cheering on your fellow dancers, supporting a good cause and also getting to see many other talented dancers from surrounding studios perform.  There are two opportunities next month, Dance Northeast on March 23rd and Dancing to Make A Difference on March 30th. The Events page has more detailed information for you.

Recital is June 8th and 9th!!!

Our Recital theme is… *drumroll*… “BE INCREDIBLE”! Our Production dancers have been hard at work on their Incredibles choreography and can’t wait to share the opening number at Recital. Mark your calendars for June 8th & 9th if you haven’t already! We will be sending out information on tights, shoes, hair, and accessories in the near future.

Student Choreography Showcase

If the dancer has completed all steps on or before March 16th and makes it into the Showcase, there is a performance fee of $20 per dancer per dance to cover the cost of running the Showcase.  Audience members do not need to buy tickets for the Showcase. We look forward to a wonderful show!

Illness Policy

As winter season has started, we are seeing more and more kids coming in with illnesses of varying degrees and types. We would like to take a moment and go over our policy for illness with you so we can help keep our studio and dancers as healthy as possible this school year.

Please make sure anyone coming to the studio either to attend classes or sit in the reception area, are free of the following symptoms for at least 24 hours WITHOUT medications before returning to class:
*Vomiting
*Diarrhea
*Fever
*Green Mucous
*Productive Cough

Remember that any class missed due to illness is able to be made up by attending either the same level or a level below for your child’s age range in any style they choose.

Thank you for helping to keep our dancers healthy!

Checking Dancer’s Absences

We wanted to remind you that you can check your dancer’s absences in your online portal! This feature is especially helpful if your dancer is working toward getting perfect attendance for the year, and to clarify if there are any classes to make up.  Occasionally a teacher might miss taking attendance, so if you know your dancer has a class to make up that isn’t showing up in the portal, you are still, of course, welcome to make that class up. Dancers in Pre-Dance classes and higher are eligible for Perfect Attendance.  We have found that is a great age for dancers to start to take responsibility in attending class each week to get the most out of their dance education.

To view your dancer’s absences, log into your online portal, click on “My Account”, “My Students”, and choose the “Absences” tab. To schedule a make up class, please email Nicole at info@joyofdancenh.com

Happy New Year Joy of Dancers! Classes resume today 1/2!

Costume Remainders

The remaining $35 of costume fees are due January 1st and must be paid by the 1oth.  Costumes are ordered on January 11th for up-to-date accounts only.  This includes tuition as well as all costume fees.  Accounts must be current (January tuition and costumes paid in full) by January 10th. Costumes will not be ordered for accounts that are not up-to-date.  Accounts that are not current prior to costume ordering (by end of day January 10th) will incur a $10.00 shipping charge per costume for late costume orders and run the risk of not receiving the costume(s) in time for Picture Day and possibly even Recital due to back ordered dates.

Costume Measurements

Costume companies do not accept returns.  Therefore, once the costume is ordered in January, it can not be canceled or returned for a refund if the need should arise.  We know our younger dancers can grow quite a bit between when we measure in December and when recital comes along in June.  To account for this, we add 2 inches to the girth (the leotard size) and always size up.  Better to take in some straps than to have it be too small!  If the costume seems a little small,  most costumes come with extra room in the straps, so they can be taken out if needed.  We are happy to discuss sizing for your dancer’s costumes if you feel this could be an issue.

Recital Date Reminder

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Recital weekend at Dover High School  June 8th & 9th, with tech rehearsals during the week.  It feels far away now, but it will be here before we know it!

Speaking of Recital, we will be starting choreography for our recital dances this month!  At this time, we ask that our dance parents speak to their dancers about the importance of making a commitment to their classmates to finish out the dance year.  Formations are specific to each number of dancers in the piece and can be hard to re-do if a dancer decides not to continue.  Dance is a team sport and everyone depends on each other in order to put on a great show! Thanks so much for your understanding and help on this!

bandlink_200x200.png Band App

We are excited to announce that we will be using the Band App this year to upload videos of Recital choreography! This is helpful for dancers to practice at home and practice makes perfect! Please download the Band App in the app store first. After, you can use the attached link below to connect to our profile.  Dances will be placed in albums according to the dance of the week they meet.

Summer Dance Survey

With the cold weather outside, it’s hard to think ahead to the warm summer months, but we like to plan ahead! We know that many families already have vacations planned, and want to offer summer programs that fit your needs. There will be a survey sent out in the next couple of weeks that we are asking families to fill out.  We greatly appreciate your time and help with offering programs your dancers are excited to take.

Student Choreography Showcase

Any dancer ages 8 and older are invited on Saturday, March 16th at 2:00 pm to audition for the Showcase. If the dancer has completed all steps on or before March 16th and makes it into the Showcase, there is a performance fee of $20 per dancer per dance to cover the cost of running the Showcase.  Audience members do not need to buy tickets for the Showcase.

Important Message About Posting Dances to Social Media

Parents, please note that we share dances at the last class of each month. Dancers love to perform and we urge you to come into the studio to watch! As we start to work on our recital pieces, we wanted to send a note about posting to social media.  We LOVE to see pictures of our dancers having fun both inside outside of class, so please tag us when posting on Facebook and/or Instagram (@joyofdancenh).  However, we respectfully ask you not to post any videos of choreography you take during class or at any performances.  This is because rehearsal videos are meant for practice purposes only and are not performance ready for the public to see.  We also want people to be surprised at Recital! We will be sharing small snippets of pieces on our FaceBook page and encourage you to shares those with friends and family. After Recital, we are happy to see videos you have taken of dances posted to social media.  In fact, we encourage it!  We just ask that you please tag us in your posts so people know where you dance and how to find us.  Thank you for your understanding on this!

Don’t forget, we will be open on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 21st.

Closings

If you are ever unsure when we are open/closed for holidays and breaks, please make sure to check in the Parents and Students handbook and also on the events page of our website. It’s always a good idea to add those dates to your phone calendar as well! Weather-related closings will be sent out through an e-mail, posted to our Facebook page, as well as on the “Cancellations” page under the About tab.

Come one come all to a special Winter Wonderland Workshop at Joy of Dance. Participants ages 5-10 will spend the afternoon crafting ornaments and dancing in a magical wonderland themed class. Date: Sunday, December 16th
Time: 1:00-2:30
Ages: 5-10
Cost: $22 or $20 cash or check

Boots & Slippers

Cold and bitter weather is on the horizon whether we like it or not. Please remember to take off your mucky boots when entering the studio and place them on a shoe rack, not just the matt (we don’t want anyone to trip!). We understand feet get cold in the winter and bringing slippers with you to the studio might be a good solution to keep your toes toasty while you wait in the reception area during your dancer’s class.

Important Costume Information

Most families have paid their costume deposits and we thank you for being on top of that! The remaining balance will be posted at the end of the month and due January 1st. Please note, costumes will only be purchased for those dancers with up-to-date accounts on January 10th. If your account is not up-to-date at that time, there will be an extra $10 per costume fee to cover the extra cost of placing the dancer’s order separately. Ordering late will also run the risk of not receiving the costume in time for Picture Day. Please e-mail Nicole at info@joyofdancenh.com with any questions or concerns.

This week we will be measuring all dancers for costumes. We will add 2 inches to all girth measurements(the leotard measurement), as we know these kids can grow fast! If you are concerned about the size we will be ordering for your dancer (for example, if you think he or she will be going through a growth spurt), please let us know and we can look at it together to avoid needing to make alterations.

$5 Fill A Class Special

Throughout the month of December (1st-18th), current and new students may try out any open class for just $5! This is the perfect time to check out that class you’ve always been interested in trying or to get some extra technique training in. Register on our website here: https://joyofdancenh.com/register/ or through your parent portal for any class that has available room. When registering, just add code: SPECIAL5 in the comment section! New and existing students may take advantage of this offer. Per our trial class policy, dancers will automatically be enrolled in the class 48 hours after the last class (December 20th) unless the office is notified of your student dropping. It’s that easy to get into a new class for the new year!

December Wingman Activities

In our December dance classes, we are discussing what it means to go above and beyond for others and to be grateful. Their Wingman activity this month involves an “act of service” which enhances the understanding of gratitude and humility, and provides you with a surprise gift! We hope the dancers are willing to share the discussions they have taken part in this month around this activity. How you can help: Discussions at home that include the idea that going above and beyond for others can happen at any time of the year, not just during holidays, will help enforce positive behavior and gratitude all year round. Questions like, “what are you grateful for?” and “how did you show you were grateful today?” will help your dancer learn the importance of expressing appreciation and developing humility and gratitude. Next April our studio will be investing in our community with give-back events, and over the coming months, we would like to start collecting ideas for ways the dancers can be of service. These two websites are just an example that contains activities children can get involved within the community to spark discussion with your dancer:

List of volunteering opportunities for teens by city

List of volunteering opportunities for kids

List of ways kids from toddlers to teens can volunteer

Holiday Break and PJ Week!

As a reminder, the studio will be closed for the holiday break from December 19th to January 1st. We are open Wednesday, January 2nd. The last week of classes, December 12th-18th, before the break is PJ week! Dancers are welcome to wear their favorite pair of PJs to class all this week. Please make sure you are able to dance in your PJs or wear your dance clothes underneath.

French Lollipop Test

Also from December 12th- 18th, Ballet dancers age 5 and up will have their French Lollipop test.  The French Lollipop test is designed to test the ballet knowledge they have been working towards all year so far.  Even though Ballet originated in Italy in the 15th century, it was developed further in France, where it adopted French terminology. Dancers are tested on both the technique and terminology of what they have learned in ballet so far.  This is a really fun test and nothing to stress over! If a dancer forgets a step, they can always ask a friend(or a teacher!) to help.

2019 Annual Sleepover

The Joy of Dance Sleepover will be January 26th! Dancers will learn a combo, share recital pieces, play dance games and have lots of fun! We provide pizza, snacks, and drinks. Drop off will be 5:15-5: 30 pm and pick up 7:45-8: 00 am. Any dancer ages 8 and older can sign up. The cost is $30 per dancer and $15 for each additional dancer in the family. Space is limited and the fee must be paid when you sign up. Register Here!

Need a gift for the Holidays?

Have family & friends give the gift of dance this holiday season! Giving the gift of dance is a wonderful present from grandparents, aunts or uncles, or even family friends! Dance gift certificates are perfect for new OR already enrolled Joy of Dance students and we would be happy to make one for you. Email us at info@joyofdancenh.com

Student Choreography Showcase

For dancers 8 years old and up, the signup sheet for our Student Choreography Showcase is at the studio. There are only 3 months left until the audition, so it’s best to get started soon! The information sheet on the Showcase will be listed on the Recital page of our website soon.

Recital at Dover High School June 8th & 9th

Please mark your calendars for Recital that will be held at the NEW Dover High School Auditorium on June 8th and 9th! The Student Choreography Showcase will take place on Sunday as well. Tech rehearsals will be held the Tuesday and Wednesday before the show on the 4th and 5th. Classes will get about 8-10 minutes on stage to block spacing and run each dance 1-2 times. Dancers should be in full hair, makeup, and costume for all tech rehearsals. We encourage dancers to stay and watch other dancers practice as they won’t get a chance to do so at Recital.

More information and the order for the Recital and Tech Rehearsals will be available in the Spring.

Have a fabulous holiday season!!!

Inclement Weather

As we are approaching snow season, we want to remind everyone how to know about any inclement weather cancellations. Most of the time if school is closed, the studio will be closed as well. In case of closure, we will post to the website (please hover over the home tab to see the Cancellation tab), Facebook and send out an e-mail roughly 2 hours before the start of class. We will not be in the studio to answer phone calls so please check these three places first. Please note, per our policies, Joy of Dance is not responsible for cancellations due to bad weather, however, students are always welcome to make up any missed classes at another time.  Just send us an email so we don’t have too many makeups on the same night.

Boots & Slippers

Cold and bitter weather is on the horizon whether we like it or not. Please remember to take off your mucky boots when entering the studio. We understand feet get cold in the winter. We have had some parents/siblings bring slippers into the studio to wear while they wait in the reception area.

Halloween Party Pictures!

We had a super fun week of Halloween party games. Head to our Facebook & Instagram pages to check out all the great pictures!

Costume Deposits

As previously mentioned, costume deposits have been posted on your account.  If you haven’t done so already, please log in to see the fees and make sure they are correct.

Recital

We are excited to announce that Recital will be held at Dover High School this year!  After some great feedback from last year’s recital, we are changing up the format this year. We will have our younger dancers in classes for 18 months to 7 years performance on Saturday, June 9th as well as our team/troupe dancers and some of our advanced classes.  Dancers in classes for ages 8 and up will perform on Sunday.  The Student Choreography Showcase will take place on Sunday as well.  The list of classes in which show on Saturday can be found on the website at the bottom of the Schedule tab.

We will be holding Tech Rehearsals this year instead of a Dress Rehearsal for each show.  Every class will get 10 minutes on stage.  This will allow more time to stage the dances for spacing before they run them.  If there is time, they should be able to run each dance twice.  This new format will help dancers be better prepared for the Recital! Tech rehearsals will full hair, makeup, and costume rehearsals and will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 5th and 6th.  I will have the list in order by May 1st if not sooner.

Dancers do not pay a recital fee, only the costume fee.  Audience members are required to buy a ticket in order to watch the recital. Younger siblings(ages 2 and under) who will be sitting on parents’ laps do not need a ticket, but if you are using a seat, then you will need a ticket, due to fire code safety.   Ticket fees pay for the rental of the recital space and school employees along with other fees associated with putting together our fabulous annual recital!

Joy of Dance Clothing Order

We are putting together a clothing order that will be sent by the end of the week and due by November 10th.  The order will be ready in December before we go on break for the holidays.  All orders are placed online through a link that we will send out in the email.

Acts of Kindness: Food Drive

Next time you go grocery shopping, why not pick up a couple items for those in need this holiday season? We will have a food drive drop off in the studio for the month of Novmeber that will be going directly to the Lee Church Congregational & The Barrington Food Pantry. Items needed include (but not limited to): baked beans, snack crackers, canned fruit and vegetables, stuffing, pie crust mix, instant oatmeal, etc. For every item brought in, you can enter to win a Joy of Dance reusable grocery tote! It is much easier to make up classes in the fall as we have not started our Recital pieces yet. Classes for ages 3- to 7-year-olds have an opposite class on a different day that you may attend. If there is not an opposite class, another class offered closest to your age group can be taken instead. Please check with the studio manager via email before making up any classes. Email is the best way to reach her at info@joyofdancenh.com.

We will be doing our annual trip to see the Nutcracker at the Rochester Opera House on Sunday, December 10th at 2:00pm.  Tickets are $26 for Adults and $22 for Students/Seniors, however, we usually have enough people to get a group discount.  Please let me know by November 19th. Once I hear from everyone, I will let you know the final price.  We have several dancers performing this year and I would love to get a big group together to cheer them on!

Thank you!

23.jpgStudent Choreography Showcase

Any student in a class for ages 8 and up can start signing up for their showcase piece! Showcase pieces allow dance students to choreograph themselves or with other dancers for Recital.  This is a wonderful opportunity for dancers to showcase their creative side along with their love of dance.  Interested dancers must have song approval before starting his or her choreography.  The checklist is listed below. Copied below is a list of FAQ’s regarding the Showcase. Student Choreography pieces will have their own showcase before the Sunday Recital. In order to make this show free for audience members to attend, there will be a small performance fee for the dancers.   Auditions will take place in March.  If you are unable to make the audition day, we will figure out another arrangement before the audition date.  We will be sending out more information on the Student Choreography Showcase within the next couple of weeks, but you can view some FAQs listed below.

FAQ’s for our Student Choreography Showcase

What is the Student Choreography Showcase?  Dancers in a class for ages 8 and up can put together a piece by themselves or with a friend to be performed in the showcase.

When are pieces performed? The Student Choreography Showcase will take place before the Sunday Recital.

Do I have to purchase tickets to attend the Showcase? No, we want as many people as possible to have the opportunity to attend the Showcase!

Why is there a Performance fee?  Because we are not requiring audience members to purchase tickets to the showcase, there is a performance fee of $20 per dancer.  This fee will cover the cost of hiring the staff at the school and our staff from Joy of Dance to put on the show as well as the rental fee without requiring audience members to purchase tickets for the showcase.

How can my dancer sign up? Miss Lindsey needs to approve of all songs before dancers start choreographing.  There is a signup sheet on her desk.

Can I do more than one piece?  All dancers are only allowed one solo.  They may also join one other group or duo piece.  The performance fee is per dancer, per dance

Why does my dancer have to audition?  The reason we are holding auditions is to make sure all choreography, music and costume ideas are completed at the time of the audition.  Before holding the auditions, we were constantly chasing dancers to complete all steps by the deadline, which isn’t fun for anyone! By holding an audition, dancers must show responsibility by being required to have everything completed by that date or they will not have their piece in the Showcase.  This will help them to take the Showcase seriously and abide by all deadlines.  As long as the dancer auditions with cut music, choreography written down, a costume idea and a polished piece(it’s ok if you forget a few steps!), he or she will have a spot in the showcase.  Dances thrown together carelessly, last minute or missing any requirements will not make it into the Showcase.

Checklist

1. The song needs to be approved by Miss Lindsey.

2. The dance MUST be under 2 minutes.

3. The written choreography is to be handed in.

4. The completed piece is to be performed at the audition.

5. Costumes need to planned out, but not purchased until April.

NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE

Best,

JoD Staff

Hello to both our new and returning families! We look forward to welcoming all the new students into the Joy of Dance family and reuniting with our returning students when classes start on Saturday, September 8th.

Important.jpgNEW Beginning in 2019: An annual membership fee of $40 per student or $75 per family will be charged April 1st to current families. The annual membership fee includes priority registration and the Recital video digital download, as well as birthday party discounts. We want to make your life easier when it comes to enrolling in classes! Once class recommendations for the following year are made, you will have two weeks to make any tweaks and adjustments. After that, we will take care of enrolling your student in the recommended classes. Reminders will be sent via email in February and March, and any family wishing to opt out must provide written notification (email) no later than March 15th.  For those opting out, a $15 Recital Digital Download fee is due on April 1st.

As payments are collected by the 10th of the month, we want to make sure everyone is accounted for since we won’t see many of you until after that due date.

Keeping up with attendance from the beginning is a great way to stay on track for perfect attendance, too!

Creative Movement Parents

We are all so excited for the start of another amazing year at Joy of Dance!  We wanted to send along a helpful article if you have a dancer who might be a little nervous to start their first day of dance.  As always, please let us know if you have any comments or concerns as we would love to help!

The Dance of Independence

Dance class may be the first time your child is separated from you.

New places and people can be frightening at first. Until your child becomes comfortable in the class, he/she may take the first few classes to watch or participate minimally. Some children may take several weeks to settle in and fully engage.

Though your child may feel safer with you in the room, remember that other children may be shy in your presence. It is best for you to wait outside the dance studio while class is in session.

What do I do if my child is crying or having a hard time going into the studio?

There’s no one magical method of helping your child through separation anxiety. The best thing to know is that we are ok with the tears if you are! Usually, once class gets started, he/she is off running. Let her know it’s ok to sit and watch for awhile too with no pressure to join unless she is ready. Each dancer is different, but if a shy dancer is participating even a little bit, then she is gaining from the experience!

Below are some things you can do to help ease the anxiety:

  • Come early to look quietly around the school and transition into the studio (let us know ahead of time if you’d like to do this so we can make sure to chose a time that is actually quiet!)
  • No need to sneak away, even when there are tears. Your positive enthusiasm and confident goodbye is reassuring.
  • Set a time for hugs, smiles, and kisses before and after class.
  • Encourage your child to teach YOU after taking the class.
  • Let your child tell you what will make the class feel safer – a teddy to stand in for you, or a

special outfit to make them feel stronger, for example.

  • Mention beforehand that you will not be properly dressed for class, so you will not be

    allowed inside the studio

  • If all else fails, and he or she will not enter the room without you, you may bring your child

into the room and sit by the door.

As important as you are to the development and learning of your dancer, as he/she grows, your child also benefits from this time apart from you.

Your son or daughter gains confidence in his ability to make choices, learn new things, form ideas all on his own, and then proudly share them.

As you witness these developments, enjoy! Watch as they learn to appreciate dancing with and without you, and value this dance of independence.
